How Long Do You Have to Wait After a Sinus Lift for Implants?
A sinus lift is considered when the back of the upper jaw does not have enough bone height for a planned dental implant. The sinus can expand into the space above missing upper teeth, leaving less bone beneath it. Dr. L.T. Johnson uses an exam and CT imaging to decide whether a graft is needed and whether an implant can be placed at the same visit.
When the implant and sinus lift can be done together
In selected patients, enough existing bone remains to stabilize the implant while Dr. Johnson lifts the sinus membrane and adds graft material. He may then place the implant during the same procedure. This decision is based on anatomy and the stability achieved during surgery, not a promise that every patient can receive an implant that day.
When the procedures need to be staged
If the site cannot support a stable implant, the graft is allowed to heal before implant placement. Dr. Johnson generally discusses about four to six months of healing for grafted sites, with upper-jaw sites often toward the longer end. Age, systemic health, bone quality, and follow-up imaging can extend that timeline. The exact plan is individualized after evaluation.
Why the waiting period matters
Grafting aims to create a better foundation for the implant, but the amount of bone gained is not guaranteed. At follow-up, Dr. Johnson checks whether enough bone is present and whether the site is ready for the next step. A restorative dentist or prosthodontist then plans and provides the final tooth after the implant has integrated.
